Abie Grossfeld has been active in gymnastics for 60 years and counting. While many of his accomplishments and contributions have been outstanding, it is his whole body of work that has been truly extraordinary. Abie Grossfeld's official capacity as an athlete, a coach, judge or head of delegation involved 8 Olympic Games, II World Gymnastics Championships, and 5 Pan American Games. He was inducted into the National USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1979 and he was inducted into the Olympic Hall of Fame in 2009; Abie Grossfeld was named one of Sports Illustrated “50 Greatest Sports Figures of the 20th Century.” Abie Grossfeld has made significant, life-long contributions to the sport of gymnastics and has had a great impact on gymnastics in Connecticut. For his many contributions to the state of the Connecticut a street in New Haven, bears his name, “Able Grossfeld Circle.”
We continue to honor Abie Grossfeld for his contribution and achievements in the sport of gymnastics, as well as his contribution to gymnastics in the state of Connecticut. To this end, the Abie Grossfeld Coach Scholarship Fund has been established to support the training of gymnasts and scholars in both men’s and women’s gymnastics in Region VI.
